Foks and Atatürk: The Loyal Companion of a Great Leader

We know Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as a soldier, a revolutionary, and the founding father of modern Turkey. But there’s a softer, lesser-known side to him, his deep love and respect for animals. Among the many stories that reflect this compassion, one little dog holds a special place: Foks, Atatürk’s beloved pet.

Who Was Foks?

Foks was a fox terrier, gifted to Atatürk during one of his trips to Germany. Though small in size, he was known for his intelligence, energy, and fierce loyalty. Foks lived with Atatürk at the Çankaya Presidential Residence in Ankara and often accompanied him on walks or sat by his side during meetings. It wasn’t uncommon for guests to find Foks comfortably curled up next to the leader, or even on his armchair.

Atatürk’s Love for Animals

Atatürk’s affection wasn’t limited to dogs. He had a deep respect for all living beings. He strongly opposed the mistreatment of animals and supported protective regulations for strays, particularly in Istanbul. To him, caring for animals was an essential part of a modern and compassionate society.

From birds to horses, many animals were part of life at the Presidential Residence, and Atatürk paid personal attention to their well-being. He even suggested that safe and respectful environments should be created for animals in Ankara.

After Foks

Foks’s passing deeply saddened Atatürk. He had him buried in the gardens of the Çankaya Residence and had a stone placed at the site. That stone still stands today, simply engraved with the words: “Foks lies here,” reportedly written by Atatürk himself.

This little dog wasn’t just a pet. He was a loyal companion to a great man who carried the weight of a nation on his shoulders.
